Weirton preparing street paving program | News, Sports, Jobs

WEIRTON The city is planning for this year’s street paving program, with a pair of resolutions set to go before Weirton Council during its meeting Monday.
The resolutions received recommendations from the city Finance Committee Wednesday.
Contracts, if approved, will include $859,280 for citywide milling and paving using general fund dollars, and $352,836 through Community Development Block Grant funds.
Both contracts are with Kelly Paving Co.
Public Works Director Rod Rosnick explained, in planning for the paving, he looked at last year’s costs of $22 per yard, and budgeted $24 per yard. Most bidders, he said, submitted proposals higher than that amount, but Kelly Paving bid between $17 and $18 per yard. ....

Parking, speeding discussed in Weirton | News, Sports, Jobs

WEIRTON – No parking areas and speed limits were among issues discussed by the city’s Traffic Commission during its meeting Thursday.
The commission, meeting both in-person and by phone, continued a previous discussion concerning a proposal from Ward 6 Councilman Enzo Fracasso on the extension of a yellow curb on Hillcrest, as well as the road’s intersection with Lane J.
Chairman Romie Castelli explained one of the issues is because of a group of three vehicles, near the top of a hill on the street, which has caused difficulties for some residents.
“That’s where he wants the yellow line, to the top of the hill,” Castelli said. ....

WEIRTON The Weirton Police Department could soon add a new tool to its arsenal.
During its meeting Wednesday, the city’s Finance Committee recommended authorizing the acceptance of a grant from the state Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management for the purchase of license plate readers for use by the police department. The grant would be for $40,000, with a $20,000 match by the city.
The resolution will go before the full Weirton Council during its meeting Monday.
Police Chief Charlie Kush explained current plans are to outfit three city cruisers with the license plate readers, which will provide a scan of motor vehicles’ license plates. ....
