ELKTON â For Cecil County 18-year-old Coleman Mixon, going to the United States Military Academy at West Point has deep family roots.
His father and his three older brothers all attended the institution, which has a 12 percent acceptance rate. All applicants must receive either a congressional nomination or a service nomination, which is for the children of active, retired or deceased veterans.
Mixon learned about his West Point acceptance on March 19, the day before his birthday.
âThere was relief,â said Mixonâs father Laurence, who served in Army Intelligence for 30 years. âI was happy for him.â
Laurence said the pandemic made all the interviews required for West Point, except one with Congressman Andy Harris, virtual.

PORT DEPOSIT â Although the charter does not require it, Mayor Wayne Tome decided to resign from his town leadership to focus on his new position as director of the Cecil County Department of Emergency Services.
âI could wear two hats but I didnât want anything to distract me from my new role,â Tome said. Heâs been mayor of Port Deposit this time around for 11 years. Tome noted this was the third time he has stepped down from the town board.
âI had to resign from the council to run for mayor and I had to resign as mayor to run for the county,â he said. Tome was a Cecil County Commissioner from Dec. 2006 through Dec. 2010.
