Classical home listening: a dream wind ensemble and the female muse

Chamber music for wind tends to be overshadowed by that for strings (guilty as charged), but here’s a disc that beguiles and dazzles in every bar.
Belle Époque: French Music for Wind (Chandos) features the Orsino Ensemble – formed in 2018, this is their debut album – and the pianist Pavel Kolesnikov. The chosen works, from around the turn of the last century, are for different combinations of instruments. Clarinettist Matthew Hunt and Kolesnikov revel in the voluptuous wit of Debussy’s Petite Pièce and Première Rhapsodie.
The pure-toned elegance of Alec Frank-Gemmill’s horn playing is on display in Saint-Saëns’s Romance, Op 36. Flautist Adam Walker, director of Orsino, is a winning soloist in Chaminade’s Concertino, Op 107, and in Debussy’s Syrinx: ever virtuosic and sensuous. With Amy Harman (bassoon) and Nicholas Daniel (oboe) adding glory to ensemble works by Roussel and Caplet, this is all-star playing of the highest l ....

As Mother’s Day approaches and the prospect of large family gatherings slips further into the future, part of me is relieved. Despite a year’s worth of grumbling over subdued holidays at home and missing my extended family, I’m dreading our first family gathering after the lockdown. Because it will be the first celebration without my mother, and that empty chair will be devastating.
We’ve said goodbye to so many mothers over this last year, whether because of COVID or other cruel diseases. These women were the beating hearts of families who will only feel the loss more acutely when they’re finally allowed to gather around the table. ....

Although Brahms and Tchaikovsky share a birthday this month, the relationship between them was not always harmonious. The two embraced vastly different ideas of composition. Brahms felt as if he was continuing Beethoven’s legacy, and believed that music should be absolute with no extra meanings, music for music’s sake. It was another follower of Beethoven, though, that helped create the sound world of Tchaikovsky and many of his fellow composers. Hector Berlioz was an influential composer whose treatise on orchestration was like a religious text to many of the Russian composers. Berlioz’s innovative use of orchestration created a world of new colors for composers like Tchaikovsky to explore. This created his view that the works of more traditional composers were stagnant. Tchaikovsky saw Brahms as an “empty chasm” and once said, “everything he does is serious… beauty, is simply not there.” Brahms ....

In January 2020 Sylvia Smith fell. In the months following surgery, the formerly spry West Island senior had to find something to keep herself occupied. By October Sylvia and her two daughters, Ethel and Sheryl, had developed a successful recipe for how to respect her limited mobility and to do it together as a mother-and-daughters project. ....
