New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh to be made as parties to a pending petition challenging the state laws against ‘love jihad’ – a term used to describe alleged forced conversions due to inter-faith marriages.
A bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde and also comprising Justices AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian also permitted Muslim body Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind to become a party to the petition on the ground that a large number of Muslims are being subjected to harassment under these laws across the country. ....

New Delhi, Feb 17: The Supreme Court on Wednesday permitted an NGO to make Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh as parties to a pending petition challenging the controversial state laws regulating conversions due to inter-faith marriages.
A bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde also allowed Muslim body Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind to become a party to the petition on the ground that a large number of Muslims are being harassed under these laws across the country.
The top court on January 6 had agreed to examine controversial new laws of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand regulating religious conversions due to interfaith marriages. ....

Jaipur (Rajasthan) [India], January 18 (ANI): Rajasthan Police has said that an interfaith wedding held in Bikaner was conducted with the consent of the girl, countering allegations by her family that she was coerced into marrying into a different religion and had accused the police of inaction.
A couple got married in court, both have them have also recorded their statements in the Naya Shahr police station where the girl has presented her marriage documents. Both are adults and got married without any pressure. There is no love jihad in this. They stated that they were receiving threats to their lives. The girl s grandfather has also demanded security, Bikaner Superintendent of Police Preeti Chandra on Sunday told ANI. ....

The Allahabad High Court ruling that people marrying under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, can choose not to publicise their union with a notice 30 days in advance may not exactly be a judicial pushback against problematic anti-conversion laws enacted by several BJP-ruled States. But it serves to get a major irritant out of the way of couples wanting to marry against the wishes of their parents or their immediate community. Many intercaste and inter-faith marriages have faced violent opposition from those acting in the name of community pride or those raising the bogey of ‘love jihad’. Hindutva activists have been targeting Muslim men marrying Hindu women, especially if the women have converted to Islam prior to the marriage.
