A blow for transparency, but culture shift may be far off From left are Information Commissioner retired Justice Keith Thompson, Attorney General Carl Bethel and Deputy Information Commissioner Shane Miller. The announcement by the attorney general on Sunday of the appointments of an information commissioner and a deputy commissioner, and the opening of the Freedom of Information office – though not yet to the public – were important steps in a long quest for more open and accountable government. But it will likely take a very long time before we experience a culture shift in our government and in the public service, which have traditionally been strongly opposed to providing the media and the wider public access to information they have a legitimate right to have. ....
Wirral West MP Margaret Greenwood A WIRRAL MP has renewed calls for the government to ban fire and rehire - a practice whereby employers dismiss workers in order to re-employ them on worse terms and conditions. Margaret Greenwood was speaking during a debate in Parliament in which she highlighted that the practice seems to have become more common since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. In January this year, the Trades Union Congress estimated that, since March 2020, nearly one in 10 workers have been told to reapply for their job on worse terms and conditions. Their research showed that young people have been particularly badly affected, with nearly a fifth of 18 to 24-year-olds who were surveyed saying that their employer has tried to rehire them on inferior terms during the pandemic. ....
Slovenia Times 1. May, 2021 Ljubljana – After a massive anti-government protest in Slovenia’s capital on Resistance Day, several hundred protesters hit the streets on their bicycles on Friday, stopping by at the headquarters of the Slovenian Press Agency (STA) on their way to express support before lighting a bonfire in the square in front of the parliament building. The protest, which is being held in defiance of the ban on gatherings of more than ten people, has been unfolding peacefully with most protesters wearing face masks. Stopping by the STA headquarters, the protesters were addressed by Jaša Jenull, one of the protest movement leaders, who said the government was trying to silence press freedom, describing the STA as “one of the symbols of press freedom” in Slovenia. ....
Slovenia Times 1. May, 2021 Sežana – An association fostering memory of the anti-Fascist underground organisation has distanced itself from the state Resistance Day ceremony at a monument to three TIGR members, which they see as distortion of history. In a written protest issued on Friday, TIGR Primorske said the 27 April ceremony in Mala Gora near Ribnica in the south of the country did not pay due tribute to those who made a decisive contribution to the World War II victory on Slovenian soil. The association was bothered that “not a word” was said about the special status of Primorska, Slovenia’s western region, under Fascist Italy where the “flame of resistance” was ignited as early as 13 July in Trieste, or about the Liberation Front and its values, or the Partisan resistance, which also involved TIGR members. ....
Deutsche Welle launches Hungarian service: Emerging Europe this week April 30, 2021 Central Europe Bulgaria looks set for a new election after the country’s anti-establishment party, There Is Such A People (ITN), said this week it would not try to form a government despite a surge of support in this month’s parliamentary poll. The populist party – led by singer and TV host Slavi Trifonov – surprisingly finished second in the polls behind only Prime Minister Boyko Borissov’s centre-right GERB party. Popular anger at widespread corruption boosted support for ITN and two smaller anti-graft parties at the April 4 election, but even together the three parties do not have a majority in the fragmented parliament. ITN has ruled out working with Mr Borissov. ....
