WASHINGTON: The Army is asking industry if it can accelerate delivery of a new scout drone, FTUAS, to replace the aging RQ-7 shadow after a successful year of field tests of four competing prototypes, culminating in a rainy-day “rodeo” at Fort Benning.
It was “a great infantryman day, a cold, rainy day where we couldn’t have launched the Shadow in that weather,” Col. Scott Anderson, project manager for drones, said. “All those systems launched and flew really spectacularly in that kind of weather and got great feedback from the soldiers. ....

One after the other, four potential replacements for the Army’s RQ-7 Shadow drone wowed soldiers and their commanders during a flight demonstration in a chilly Georgia downpour that would have grounded the legacy drone.
“Hello from cold, wet, and dreary Fort Benning,” Brig. Gen. Walter Rugen, director of Future Vertical Lift at Army Futures Command, told reporters during a conference call on March 2. “Shadow could never fly in this type of moisture, couldn’t even come close.”

Senior Army aviation officials on Tuesday watched flight demonstrations of a handful of prototype drones built for vertical takeoffs and landings, which the service hopes will lead to a rapid replacement of the 30-year-old RQ-7B Shadow.
On a rainy day at Fort Benning, Georgia, soldiers from five brigade combat teams, or BCTs, across the Army participated in the Future Tactical Unmanned Aerial System, or FTUAS, Rodeo. The event wrapped up months of field evaluations involving four UAS the Arcturus Jump 20, L3 Harris Unmanned Systems FVR-90, Martin UAV V-Bat, and Textron Systems Aerosonde Hybrid Quad. ....

The U.S. Navy is rafting up to the Army’s Future Vertical Lift (FVL) game, launching an official search for possible successors to the MH-60R/S Seahawk and MQ-8 Fire Scout unmanned helicopter.
Navy officials plan to conduct an analysis of alternatives (AoA) “to identify cost-effective alternatives to fill capability gaps in the MH-60R/S and MQ-8C as they begin to reach their end of service in the 2030s,” according to a notice published Jan. 28 on the U.S. government’s contracting website. ....

By midyear, the U.S. Army should have nailed down what it wants in a replacement for the RQ-7 Shadow drone, with emphasis on vertical takeoff and landing capability that will untether ground combat units from prepared airfields.
Plans are to have the capability development document an official list of weapon system requirements for the Future Tactical Unmanned Aerial System (FTUAS) finalized and approved by a board of Army procurement oversight officials by the end of June, according to Col. Joseph Anderson, the Army’s UAS program manager. ....
