Basildon Lee Chapel: School day extension plans divide teachers and parents


A GOVERNMENT move to extend the school day to help children catch up with learning after the Covid pandemic has divided parents and teachers across south Essex.
Ministers are considering paying teachers to add an extra 30 minutes to the school day in England to help pupils overcome disruption caused by coronavirus.
In an online poll on the Echo website, 39 per cent of people said they would agree with extending the school days while 60 per cent disagreed.
Sue Jackson, headteacher of Lee Chapel School, in Basildon, backed the idea and outlined a similar initiative at her own school.
She said: “I would be in favour of extending the school days to make sure the children can catch up. ....

Postal issues cause patients to miss vital cancer scans


BASILDON has been put on a postal “blacklist” as the Royal Mail battles Covid outbreaks among staff.
The postal service has been hit with staff shortages across the country due to workers testing positive and others self isolating.
Basildon has been included on a “blacklist” of 28 areas across the UK that have not been receiving regular post.
Vicky Wright, from Basildon, said her 69-year-old mum Christine, who had breast cancer ten years ago, has missed tests at Southend Hospital because the letter arrived late.
The 48-year-old, said: “Her mammogram came back inconclusive. She only has one every three years. She was meant to have an appointment on the 28th, but the letter only came through the week after. ....

Pokemon Go players hit back over Essex Police Covid tweet


POKEMON lovers and police are at loggerheads over Covid-19 rules and what counts as exercise during lockdown. 
The force took to social media after speaking to a number of adult men who were seen using the Pokemon Go app in Rochford – urging them to stay home instead. 
But since, the force has come under fire online and subsequently deleted the Facebook post after it began to gain flack worldwide. 
A thread on Reddit has received more than 600 comments, with the public debating whether playing the game – which involves walking and catching Pokemon through your phone – constitutes your daily exercise.
