The Continuing Impact and Legacy of RUPAUL'S DRAG RACE

Share
There is more LGBTQ programming on television than ever before. So much so, that it’s easy to forget that just a decade ago, things were very different. Sure, there were already gay characters on TV around the early 2000s. And reality shows like
Survivor had openly gay contestants. But until
RuPaul’s Drag Race premiered in 2009 on a fledgling cable network called LoGo, there wasn’t a truly successful series made by queer creators, starring queer cast members, and made specifically for a queer audience. It’s not an exaggeration to say that
RuPaul’s Drag Race changed ....

Rufus Wainwright's 'Poses' Is Still Baroque Pop Perfection

5 June 2001
Rufus Wainwright has always been equal parts relatable and out of reach, and it’s this precise combination that makes him so captivating. He was born in Rhinebeck, New York, to Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III (Canadian and American folk luminaries, respectively); after his parents’ divorce, he moved to Montréal with his mother and spent the majority of his childhood there, playing piano by age six and becoming a touring musician at 13. He is preternaturally talented and almost overly cultured, steeped in classical music and literature from a young age due to his pedigree and a private-school education.  ....

Twenty-nine years ago, two Bristol-based documentary makers were casting around for their next project. Steve Poole and Bernard Hall had heard whispers about tension between residents in the small Somerset village of Pilton and Michael Eavis, the local farmer who ran the freewheeling Glastonbury Festival on fields adjoining the village. They decided to gently investigate.
The duo started regularly driving down to Pilton, 25 miles away, where they’d chat to locals in The Crown pub and visit Eavis at his home on Worthy Farm. On an early recce, they noticed that someone had erected a 30-foot white cross in their garden overlooking the festival site. The filmmakers had stumbled across a very English culture clash: the quiet and conservative village with strong Christian values versus the Methodist farmer with the vast Pagan music jamboree at which, two years previously, New Age Travellers ha ....
