Equitrans supports return to tighter methane rules
Pennsylvania-based Equitrans Midstream said April 16 it was adding its voice to the growing chorus of those expressing support for a return to tighter methane emission regulations.
Two resolutions moving through the US Congress would repeal the 2020 Methane Rescission Rule from the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA last year loosened standards on emissions of methane and volatile organic compounds from new oil and gas facilities, part of the Trump administration’s effort to break up bureaucracy for the benefit of US energy dominance. ....

But the need for oil and gas in the coming decades will put the UK in a strong position for the net-zero carbon future, regulatory conditions permitting. [NGW Magazine Volume 6, Issue 6]
by: William Powell
There is a tension between the social pressures driving a number of European governments to set dates for achieving net-zero carbon economies on one hand, and the advantages of producing more oil and gas at home on the other.
The focus on environment, social and governance (ESG) issues has risen far up the agenda of banks and investors. Shareholders too are becoming increasingly active.   ....

Summary
If you read the media headlines, you may get the impression that China intends to become the world’s clean energy and hydrogen superpower. China is even said to be in a race with Europe to become the global green hydrogen leader. In reality, China is only gradually and cautiously adapting its fossil-fuel based energy system. It is not in a hurry to say goodbye to oil, coal and natural gas. [Gas Transitions Volume 2, Issue 2]
by: Karel Beckman
There is a lot of discussion in western media about whether China is a genuine “climate leader” or is engaged in a gigantic act of greenwashing. Critics of China’s climate efforts have pointed out that China is continuing to invest heavily in coal-fired power. It currently has 250 GW of new (“clean”) coal-fired capacity in the pipeline, writes Henrik Bork of Asia Waypoint in a recent analysis. ....

Among the legacies of the Soviet Union is the failure to develop certain Caspian Sea reserves. Cross-border rivalries persist, despite agreements on paper.
by: Joseph Murphy
Since the end of the Soviet Union, the development of some of the Caspian Sea’s substantial oil and gas reserves has been stifled by territorial disputes between the five littoral states. All but Iran are former members of the USSR.
Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Russia have divided the northern Caspian among themselves through bilateral agreements based on median lines, allowing them to push ahead with some major projects. Other areas of the sea remain contested, though, with Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkmenistan all having competing claims. But there have been indications in recent years that those three countries are finally adopting a more pr. ....
