New York schools racing to craft spending plans for federal grants


Education leaders say that July 1 may not be a realistic deadline for many districts to meet Cardona s goals or execute the best possible plans for spending their federal grants over three years.
If we really want thoughtful stakeholder feedback and input, and we really are committed to spending these dollars as intelligently as possible, we re going to have to push back that July 1 requirement, said Joe Ricca, president of the Lower Hudson Council of School Superintendents, which includes school chiefs in Westchester, Rockland, Dutchess and Putnam counties.
School districts are still working on bringing their children back full time; they re still working on all the complexities associated with the pandemic, Ricca, the White Plains superintendent, said. Yonkers remembers 10 students lost to violence, illness, mental health


Families of the 10 students were given bouquets of roses by their child’s school principals. 
Four of the 10, all 18 years old and recent graduates of Saunders Trade and Technical High School, were killed Dec. 22 when their car was hit by a vehicle driven by a Mount Vernon man seeking to evade police.
“It’s extremely difficult [for a school community],” Roosevelt Principal Edward DeChent said at the assembly. “But when we pull together and we support each other and we support the family … it doesn’t make it easier, but it makes the pain slightly easier to bear.”
Afterwards, the whole assembly stood in silence while Saunders High School student Gleny Perez sang the refrain from Charlie Puth’s “See You Again”: “It s been a long day without you, my friend, and I ll tell you all about it when I see you again.” Several attendees pulled down their masks to wipe away tears, and three family members were so overcome with emotion that they left the ....

The Yonkers community came together Wednesday to remember 10 students in the district whose lives were lost too soon.
School officials, local leaders and grief-stricken parents gathered in the gym of Roosevelt High School for the solemn memorial ceremony.
Ten empty white chairs in front symbolized the young lives cut short.
Among them were four teens who died in a car crash in Yonkers just days before Christmas last year
Tamari Watkins Sr. s son was one of those killed.
Ten young lives lost. It was just heartbreaking. Again, I tried to hold it together, but it s rough, he says. ....

Yonkers schools welcome students back in-person 4 days a week beginning Monday

school students in Yonkers will be returning to in-person learning Monday
following months of being taught from home.
Yonkers Superintendent Edwin Quezada announced the decision to move to a 4 days
a week schedule for in-person instruction in March.
The decisions came after a unanimous vote from the Yonkers Board of Education
and pushback from local parents and students.
In a letter to parents, Quezada outlined what the return to school will be
like, including bus capacity of 50%, school auditoriums abiding by Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention guidelines and desktop barriers being installed ....
