Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force JoAnne Bass has a duty day unlike most who put on the uniform. She often gets things started by 4:30 a.m. before embarking on workdays jam-packed full of office tours, command briefs and meeting with Airmen across various installations, which she calls the “best part of my job . hands down.” After beginning the day before sunrise more than 1,000 miles away at Wright-Patterson AFB around 1:30 p.m. June 2 for the start of a three-day visit. The chief immediately hit the ground running with a meet-and-greet at the 88th Communications Group. A team of seven Airmen, led by U.S. Air Forces Europe-Air Forces Africa chief of staff, conducted a force development engagement with the Senegalese air force in Dakar and Thies, Senegal, May 25-28, 2021. Force development engagements strengthen AFAFRICA’s relationships with partners like Senegal and provide an invaluable platform for sharing ideas and best practices to enhance essential capabilities. “This program gives us a chance to share ideas on how to meet current threats and overcome various challenges from the institutional capacity building perspective,” said Noel Fachi, USAFE-AFAFRICA force development program manager. “Getting new aircraft and other materials is important, but if the foundational personnel and resource management systems aren’t in place, having the best equipment won’t be enough to maintain an effective force.” ....

The SWORD Lab is a 26,000 square foot, $12.8 million state-of-the-art facility, with office and laboratory space that will house the 65 scientists, engineers and support staff of the directorate’s Space Control Branch to better integrate R&D programs focused on improving space warfighting capabilities.
“One of the reasons we stood up the U.S. Space Force was to ensure our nation has the capabilities to deter any threats in space,” said Felt. “Our job in the SWORD lab will be to continue to develop resilient and innovative technologies that will protect our nation and allies from threats by our adversaries. Recognizing that space is an emerging domain for warfighting, we want to make sure there is never a war in space.” ....
