It seems that Shane Wright has been drinking the Kool-Aid left behind by Mathias “debt and deficit disaster” Cormann (“An ocean of debt”, May 15-16). The economy has not “bounced back” after COVID-19, as some suggest. Rather, it has been dragged into better shape by massive government spending – but it is still far from healthy. Even the current Treasurer has acknowledged that “the best way to fix the budget is to fix the economy”. Full employment and price stability must always be our goals. Budget surpluses or deficits are simply a record of whether the private sector or the government has had to do the heavy lifting. - ....

The Coalition’s response to the situation in India is horrifying (“Fines and jail for those who flout India ban”, May 1-2). There is another possible response that is humane and just: get them home as soon as possible. What does it say about the government’s confidence in our quarantine systems when citizens in this dire situation are locked out? Parnell Palme McGuinness’ assessment of “Boomer feminism” is both condescending in its label and outrageous in the assertion that its benefits were accrued “only to the already privileged” (“Boomer feminism is not what we need at this transformational moment”, March 13-14). Her claim that the “poor” and less “intellectual” were left behind to deal with the unwanted consequences of the sexual revolution is both unsubstantiated and insulting to the many feminists from my Boomer generation who have consistently worked to improve the lives of women, especially those without the resources to challenge government and societal rules and expectations. The only “shallow” thin ....
