The Colorado Avalanche has an early series lead in its Round 1 matchup with the St. Louis Blues, but the team wants to continue to improve as the best-of-seven series progresses.
The Avs got their first puck on net 5:56 into the first period after the Blues had fired three already but finished the frame with an 18-5 edge in shots on goal and a 1-0 advantage on the scoreboard. Jost scored two of Colorado’s five second-period goals as the Avalanche clinched the West Division and the top overall seed in the NHL playoffs with a 5-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night.
One goal down. Now the real work begins.
“The playoffs are a different animal. Everybody knows that,” Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said. “No one’s going to look at us and say, ‘Yep, they won the Presidents’ Trophy. We’re going to roll over everyone.’ It’s not going to happen. It’s going to be a tough grind. It can put a target on your back, but we have to be comfortable with that.” ....
