It is rare for me to write a letter to the editor expressing my concerns about what a local government is doing. However, there are some recent examples of the City of Edmonds not practicing what they talk that are of such concern that I felt obligated to make this a statement rather than a simple comment to what has been in the news.
In January 2021, the City of Edmonds Diversity Commission published an Equity Toolkit that was based in part on a study and report published by the Commission. Results from this study and report were published by MyEdmondsNews. One of the major recommendations of this report was that everything the city should do is to view everything through what is referred to as an “equity lens.” The purpose of applying an equity lens is to be “deliberately inclusive as an organization makes decisions.” The City of Renton (a minority majority community) provides further details as to why us ....

The public is invted to the Edmonds Waterfront Center on Sunday, Aug. 1 to help welcome the arrival of the Blue Heron Canoe Family, celebrating the Native American canoeing tradition.
The event, which runs from 2-5 p.m. Aug. 1, will include the sharing of prayer, ceremony, story, song and dance with the Blue Heron Canoe Family. On Monday, Aug. 2, the ceremonial launch of the Blue Heron Canoe begins at 9 a.m. through the sending of prayers and songs at the Edmonds Waterfront Center beach marking the beginning of a two-week paddle journey to the San Juan Islands. ....

City announces new online portal to report incidents of discrimination

The City of Edmonds has established a new online portal to report incidents of bias, discrimination and hate.
According to a city announcement Monday, the new reporting tool was recommended by the Edmonds Diversity Commission.
Any issues that are criminal in nature should still be reported directly to Edmonds police by calling 911 or via the EPD online form, the city said. The new website portal gives residents a place to let the city know about non-criminal issues of concern.
The portal is monitored and reviewed by city staff, with incidents logged and then forwarded to the appropriate department. While every incident may not result in a resolution, keeping a log and tracking this information allows the city to track data and identify trends, the announcement said. ....
