Local Edmonton bon vivant Mitch Klimove dies at 97

Klimove was born in Edmonton on Sept. 27, 1923, and was raised in the city during the Great Depression. He grew up on 95 Street and was the oldest son of Sam and Minnie Klimove, who had emigrated from Ukraine. His parents owned a grocery store located in the Gibson Block building on Jasper Avenue. He attended Alex Taylor school where he first met Hollywood film director Arthur Hiller, a lifelong friend.

Adam Zepp says he was leaving his parents home Sunday evening when someone inside a passing vehicle shouted at him, Free Palestine. He wouldn t have thought much of it given the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, but then on the way out of the neighbourhood, the same people asked, Do any Jews live here?. Where do the Jews live?
It s the first time the 35-year-old Jewish Edmontonian can recall being targeted and he is sure he was in one way or another.

Edmonton, Alberta was first incorporated as a town in 1892. At that time, there were about 700 permanent residents. Founded on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River on the site of the former Hudson’s Bay Company’s Fort Edmonton, it soon began to attract a growing populace. Abraham and Rebecca Cristall, Edmonton’s first Jews, arrived in 1893. Their children, George and Rose, were the first Jewish children to be born in Edmonton. Abe became a successful businessman and helped to bring more Jews over from his native Bessarabia in Eastern Europe. By 1901, there were 17 Jewish citizens in Edmonton.
