Starkville, Oktibbeha considering juvenile curfews

Authorities in Starkville and Oktibbeha County are weighing whether to implement a juvenile curfew in an attempt to decrease crime among teenagers and pre-teens.
Oktibbeha County supervisors announced Monday they would host a public hearing to address the potential of a juvenile curfew in June. Starkville Mayor Lynn Spruill said after she heard the county was considering a curfew, she wanted to establish one as well.
“We are at a crossroads in my opinion,” Spruill said in the city board of aldermen’s work session April 30. “We have had activity north, south and in the middle of our city, and I think this is a time to recognize, to some extent, that we want parents to do it, but parents don’t seem to be parenting like they need to be.” ....

“We’re short-staffed and actively looking,” said Bean, whose Eat With Us group operates 14 restaurants in the state, including seven in the Golden Triangle. “We’re doing things we’ve never done before. We’re doing advertising for workers on TV and trying to get in touch with employees who worked with us before. We just can’t find them.” ....

The last time Eddie Hawkins spoke at the Columbus Rotary Club was in 2019. At the time, Hawkins was campaigning for Lowndes County sheriff.
On Tuesday, Hawkins returned to address the Rotarians during their luncheon using it as an opportunity to review his tenure as sheriff since being sworn into the position in January 2020.
“I think the last time I was here was during the campaign and the talk was about Kratom,” Hawkins said. “A lot of things have changed since then.” ....

The father of a man killed in an officer-involved shooting last year has filed a federal lawsuit against the city of Columbus, Lowndes County, Sheriff Eddie Hawkins and multiple officers from Columbus Police Department and Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office.

Austin Hines, 19, was fatally shot by area law enforcement officers on April 1, 2020, following a police chase involving city officers and county deputies that ended when Hines crashed his vehicle near the railroad tracks near Waterworks Road and Seventh Avenue North. Last month his father, Jason Hines of Lowndes County, filed the complaint in federal court in Aberdeen, though his attorney, Daniel Waide of Hattiesburg, said the suit initially began in Lowndes County Circuit Court last year. ....
