Close In observance of Missouri’s bicentennial on Aug. 10, the Louisiana Area Historical Museum is opening an exhibit of flags that have flown over the state from the 1700s to today. Pictured is museum board member Stephen Moss unfurling a banner used at the time of the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery expedition. Nine flags and a Native American display will be featured in the museum’s Stark Brothers Nurseries room, which has a high ceiling. Plaques underneath will offer details about each ensign. The first chance people will have to see the exhibit is from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 7. The museum is at 304 Georgia Street and there is no admission charge.

For the first day of Tippet Rise’s Spring Festival, two films have been captured at the DiMenna Center. The first features violinist Katie Hyun founding member of the Amphion String Quartet performing Vytautas Barkauskas’s Partita for violin solo. For the second film, Tippet Rise’s Artistic Advisor Pedja Mužijevic performs in a program titled Is It Real (A Loving Homage to Surrealism), which includes music and spoken word by Satie, Schwitters, and Antheil. At 7:30 pm ET there will be a “backstage” gathering via Zoom, giving artists the opportunity to discuss their performances, followed by the release of the films. View here.

Music Institute of Chicago highlights great jazz musicians Eddie South, Stuff Smith

James Sanders will shed some light on two late great violinists when he presents Dark Angels of the Violin: Jazz Legends Eddie South and Stuff Smith on March 15. The free virtual presentation by the violinist and jazz violin faculty member at the Music Institute of Chicago is part of the Music Institute’s Jazz Lecture Fall Series as well as its Beyond the Stage: Musicians on Music series.
