Sophia Grewal was growing weary with life in the city and her corporate job. It was a tour of Edgar’s Mission, a not-for-profit sanctuary for rescued farm animals in Australia, , that changed everything. “About four years ago I went on a free tour [of Edgar’s Mission] and I just fell in love with the place,” she says. “After visiting there I was kind of like, ‘What do I do with my life?’ and re-evaluated everything.”

It’s crazy how the stars align when you least expect it. For three sows and a piglet abandoned in the woods, the thought of being rescued likely seemed lightyears away. Thanks to a wildlife rescuer and a four-wheel-drive joyride, however, these beautiful beings would soon find themselves in the loving care of Edgar’s Mission.
All four pigs were severely emaciated and infested with parasites when they were found – it’s scary to think that they may not have survived much longer. With the help of kibble and gentle guidance, they were all loaded into the transport vehicle and soon headed to Edgar’s Mission.
Baarack the sheep captured the world’s attention recently for looking like a gigantic ball of wool with a nose and legs.
A construction worker found Baarack wandering the Australian bushland and knew from one look at him that he was in need of some help and some shearing. He called Pam Ahern, the founder of the farm animal sanctuary Edgar’s Mission, who swooped in with the scissors.
Ahern updated Slate on Baarack’s life post-haircut, as well as explained how the bizarre coat came to be in the first place. The conversation has been edited and condensed for clarity.
