SIU Trustees Approve Flat Tuition, Praise Administration for Pandemic Leadership


SIU s campuses in Carbondale and Edwardsville will hold tuition and mandatory fees flat next year - as administrators say higher education shouldn t be out of reach because of cost.
SIUC Chancellor Austin Lane says students and their families need a quality education, but they have to be able to afford it, too.
This is the third year in a row for not increasing undergraduate tuition. Our mandatory fees have remained at the same level since Fiscal Year 16. Just so everyone knows, we re doing everything we can to maintain our focus on affordability and accessibility.
In addition, the university s board of trustees formalized the hire of the system s first Vice President for Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Sheila Caldwell is expected to start that position this summer. ....

Judge Rules in Favor of Alton in Sunnybrook Suit

Court action over a planned housing development for the city of Alton has reached another resolution. The developer of the $10-million Sunnybrook project, Dr. Ed Hightower and his company, took the city to court a couple of years ago because it hasn’t issued a building permit. A circuit judge originally agreed and ordered the permit to be released, but an appeal to the 5
th District Court this week ruled the city was within its rights to not issue the permit.
But Alton’s Corporation Counselor Jim Schrempf tells The Big Z the city’s position may change. ....

Norfolk, Virginia special education teacher describes in-person teaching conditions
Last month, schools reopened across Virginia under a mandate by Democratic Governor Ralph Northam. In Norfolk Public Schools (NPS), elementary schools reopened on Monday, March 15, followed by middle schools on April 12 and high schools on April 26.
The city of Norfolk has had nearly 17,000 COVID-19 infection and 241 deaths, while the state of Virginia as a whole has seen nearly 650,000 cases and 10,564 deaths. All of these figures are set to increase in the coming weeks and months as a result of the broader reopening of schools and nonessential workplaces well before the pandemic is contained. ....

Norfolk, Virginia teacher exposes unsafe conditions as schools reopen
In accordance with guidelines from Virginia’s Democratic Governor Ralph Northam, public schools in Norfolk reopened their doors to elementary students on Monday, March 15. Middle school students in the Norfolk Public Schools (NPS) are set to resume in-person learning on April 12, followed by high school students on April 26.

The reopening plan implements a hybrid model and divides all classes into Group A and Group B in an effort to keep no more than 10 students in the classroom at once. Every week each group attends two days of in-person and two days online classes, while educators will have to simultaneously teach in-person and remote lessons. ....
