O'Leary's New Rooftop Garden More Than a Pretty View

Ed Brennen
In the countless hours that senior peace and conflict studies major Austin Thoren has spent studying in the O’Leary Learning Commons mezzanine, he never gave much thought to the empty cement terrace just outside the room’s floor-to-ceiling windows.
“There was never anything going on out there, so I didn’t really pay attention to it,” he says.
When students return to campus this fall, they’ll discover quite a bit going on outside the windows: a new rooftop garden of flowers, herbs and vegetables brimming from 500 neatly arranged containers.
It’s the latest addition to UML’s Urban Agriculture Program, a collaboration between the university’s Office of Sustainability and the Lowell-based urban farming nonprofit Mill City Grows.  ....

Pandemic Pivot: Business Students Open Pop-Up Panini Stand

Alec Itzaina and Madhav Makadia had to be there when the first panini was served.
A year ago, they were among the 16 Manning School of Business students in the Internship for Entrepreneurship course preparing to open “After Hours,” a student-run venture that would offer late-night fare on weekends at University Suites’ Hawk’s Nest Cafe.
After months of planning, everything was coming together for the grand opening in late March. But then, of course, COVID-19 shut down the campus.
“We were expecting to come back from spring break and open the restaurant. Then we had to stop,” says Itzaina, a senior finance student from São Paulo, Brazil. ....

Taking Stock of the GameStop Saga

Ed Brennen
Because Isaiah Langa ’20 studies finance in the Manning School of Business and has been investing on his own for several years, he occasionally receives a text message from a friend or relative seeking advice on a stock pick.
When shares of video game retailer GameStop skyrocketed by more than 2,000% in January, fueled by an online Reddit community of amateur “retail” investors trading on the popular Robinhood platform, Langa’s phone lit up.
“One day I got five texts from different people asking me about GameStop,” says Langa, a native of Dracut, Massachusetts, who is completing his Master of Science in Finance this semester after earning his bachelor’s degree in business administration last spring. “It was interesting to see how many people were involved who weren’t typically investors.” ....
