Fair Board interviews manager candidate By The News staff The Kansas State Fair Board interviewed a State Fair General Manager candidate on Thursday, Board Chairman Harmon Bliss confirmed. Bliss said a selection committee narrowed the eight applicants to two, both were interviewed. The committee then made a recommendation to the board. Bliss wouldn’t say whether the individual was offered the job following the nearly 90-minute interview, and another meeting to vote on hiring was not immediately set. However, he said another meeting likely will be scheduled next week. Bliss declined to identify the person, but said he was someone with “a significant amount of fair experience.” ....
Capper Building to be uncapped for Fair The Capper Building will go capless for the 2021 Kansas State Fair. The Kansas State Fair Board agreed on Tuesday to pay up to $25,000 to have the roof on the 108-year-old building torn off but to leave the rest of the aging open-air structure in place for the upcoming fair. After the fair, the fair’s contracted architectural firm will explore costs for replacing it with a new building, also open-air but possibly made of steel and a synthetic wood wrap. A structural engineer examined the building in April and determined it was not structurally safe. ....

The unanimous vote came after Chief Steven Beer advised that the move back south, requested suddenly by staff during the board’s meeting in May, would cost the city an additional $17,000 to redo site plans, potentially delay the project and create a dilemma of where to house firefighters during construction. ....

But while Interim Manager Ed Berger proposed a mid-July starting date for a new manager, the board voted to adopt his proposed timeline with an option to extend it. Which could mean Berger may remain manager through the 2021 fair. Berger, interim manager since October, told The News Tuesday had didn’t plan to apply for the job. A subcommittee of the board that worked on drafting the job description, led by board secretary Bob Atkisson, adopted the same description used when the board hired Susan Sankey in 2015. ....
