The first Bucks unitary council elections are over and the results are in. Buckinghamshire residents went to the polls on Thursday for the first time since the new Buckinghamshire Council came into existence back in April 2020 – one year later than planned because of the Covid pandemic. With Friday a mostly administrative day, results were revealed throughout today (Saturday) with some surprises in store. As expected, the Conservatives won a majority, taking 113 seats, while the Lib Dems came in second with 15 seats, followed by the Independents (six seats), Labour (four seats), Independent Network (two seats) and the Green Party getting a seat.
WINCHESTER University’s vice-chancellor has signed an open letter to the Prime Minister calling for stronger leadership in the face of catastrophic climate change and growing ecological collapse. Professor Joy Carter CBE DL has backed the letter from Scientists Warning Europe (SWE) which endorses the letter from former Nasa scientist, James Hansen, which also called on Boris Johnson to step up and lead the world in solving the climate crisis. SWE calls for Mr Johnson to table a much earlier net zero target of 2030 rather than 2050, highlighting the substantial support for such a target by the many UK local councils in their declarations of Climate Emergency.

Mr Gates recent campaigning has seen him emphasise the importance of bringing the 51 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases added to the atmosphere each year down to zero if we are to save the planet. The entrepreneur has called on governments to lead in taking on the huge task of reaching the net zero mark. Renewable sources like wind and solar can help us decarbonise electricity but, as Mr Gates points out, that s less than 30 percent of total emissions.
