It's this season's must-have Hermès bag. And it's made from fungus | Fashion

Last modified on Sat 12 Jun 2021 12.05 EDT
It’s fair to say that Hermès knows handbags. The luxury fashion house’s Birkin and Kelly bags are among the most expensive ever sold; demand outstrips supply by so much that you can’t even join a waiting list. Acquiring one is a matter of luck and contacts. So when Hermès announced this season’s handbag would be made from plant leather, it marked a new era in designer accessories.
The autumn/winter 2021 Hermès Victoria (prices start from about £3,500 for its previous leather version) will be made from Sylvania, a leather grown from fungus, before being crafted in France into a perfect Hermès handbag. ....

Sustainable fashion: your guide to eco-aware shopping
In celebration of Earth Day (22 April 2021), we present the Wallpaper  guide to sustainable fashion, a checklist on how to look and feel good on the inside and out
ReCollection 01, by The RealReal
‘Sustainable fashion’: a phrase common in today’s luxury parlance. But the popularity of a term doesn’t make it any easier to unpack. In fact, it makes it even more difficult to understand if a brand or retailer is operating from an environmentally-aware manufacturing perspective, or is greenwashing its production practices.
For today’s conscious consumer, the buzzwords around sustainability are becoming increasingly impenetrable, from circular economy to supply chains, traceability to carbon footprint, mycelium to micro plastics, regenerated to recycled. Not forgetting the host of conscious certifications used to to label garments (BCI, GOTS, O ....

In fashion and beyond, human rights and respect for nature are always connected

We all heard the story of a cinder girl who, with the help of her animal friends and some force of nature embodied by a fairy, has turned her life around by first donning a blue ball gown. It was magical. And up to this day, we still experience that spark from dressing up, whether in the form of a new dress, a lift given by stilettos, or an impeccably tailored suit.
But as time goes by, we soon find out that in reality many things are put on the table in order to bring out that magic. There were no creatures to help sew or fairies to give you materials with just a wave of a wand. Instead there were underpaid people working non-stop with machines and natural resources being drained out of life. This reality was given to the world through an fortunate incident that happened in Rana Plaza in Bangladesh on April 24, 2013, where 1,138 workers of the garment industry died in an eight-story buildi ....

Feed your moths and hide your trousers: the expert guide to making clothes last for ever

Feed your moths and hide your trousers: the expert guide to making clothes last for ever

There is a rip in the armpit of Orsola de Castro’s jumper. She raises her hand high in the air so I can see it: a slash of pale skin peeks from tomato-red wool. This “memory hole”, as De Castro describes it, tells the story of the jumper’s long life. It was owned by her cousin, then her daughter. “It is very old Benetton, from when Benetton was still made in Italy. You can’t see it on Zoom, but this is really nice wool,” she says, arm still aloft. ....
