The Oshawa beaches have been posted due to elevated bacteria levels, according to Durham Region Health Department. The health department tests all 14 beaches across the region on a weekly basis to test for elevated levels of E. coli. Beaches are posted as unsafe for swimming when elevated levels of E. coli exceed the provincial standard of 200 E. coli per 100 mL of water. There are six other beaches across the region that have also been posted, including Beaverton Beach South, Bowmanville Beach East and West, Newcastle Beach Central, Paradise Beach (formerly Pickering Beach), and Whitby Beach.

Man dies in Dover trailer home fire Sunday

A 61-year-old man died Sunday in a fire in Dover, according to the State Fire Marshal Office. Assistant State Fire Marshal Michael Chionchio said the fire occurred shortly after 4 p.m. at a trailer home in the unit block of 10th Street near Pickering Beach Road. When Little Creek Volunteer Fire Company arrived flames engulfed the trailer, Chionchio said. The man, who lived at the home, was pronounced dead at the scene, Chionchio said. A 67-year-old woman was taken to Bayhealth Hospital for smoke inhalation, Chionchio said. He said she was in stable condition. State fire investigators are still determining the fire s origin and cause. They estimate the fire caused $20,000 in damage. American Red Cross is providing assistance to four displaced residents.
