(April 30, 2021) Today, 80 years ago, 6,000 â soon to grow to 9,000 â Iraqi soldiers occupied the heights surrounding Habbanayi Royal Air Force Base, which was located near Lake Habbanayi, about 60 miles outside of Baghdad. Later, Iraqi troops occupied Fallujah, Ramadi and the bridges over the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. The next day, Iraqi soldiers attacked, and captured, the small British outpost at Rutbah, about 125 miles west of Baghdad, near the Transjordanian border in western Al-Anbar Province on the Amman-Baghdad Highway. The British ordered a company of the Arab Trans-Jordan Defense Force to retake the fort, but it refused to cross the Jordanian/Iraqi border. ....
A PAIR of plucky pensioners are well on the way to walking 125 miles to raise hundreds of pounds for the Royal British Legion. For years Malcolm Firman, 87, has collected for the annual Poppy Appeal outside the Co-op in Sible Hedingham. He mans the collection tins with pal David Skittral, 79. But last year’s collection in the run-up to Remembrance Day, in November, was hit by the coronavirus pandemic. Malcolm and David, who both live in the village, decided to take matters into their own hands. They set themselves the target of walking 125 miles, stepping out twice a week to complete 20 walks around the Hedinghams before the Royal British Legion’s 100th anniversary on May 15. ....
