An interdisciplinary group of University professors is working to develop, test, and deploy newly engineered artificial reefs that could decrease wave energy and help save coastlines from destruction during storms.
Miami’s beautiful beaches and tropical climate are its biggest asset, attracting thousands of tourists and potential residents each year.
But with climate change pushing sea levels and temperatures up, along with more menacing tropical storms, South Florida’s coastlines are under threat.
While communities are pouring millions into beach restoration projects or seawall restoration efforts, one group of professors at the University of Miami is using its knowledge about coral reefs, coastal engineering, architecture, and communications to come up with a more sustainable solution. ....

Both the students and city underground utilities determined just a single park fountain was in excess of EPA guidelines.
Elevated lead levels in a Cascades Park drinking fountain has brought a quick response from the City. Tom Flanigan reports the alarm came from two Florida State University environmental science students.
Linda Beauport said she and Kim Watts checked all the park s drinking fountains for elevated lead in the water.
It was the fountain closest to Lafayette Street we found some elevated levels there that exceeded the EPA s actionable levels. We found it really interesting because there s not a lot of regulations on park water fountains. ....

Evacuation ordered after officials learn of 'potentially dangerous substance'

HADDON TWP. Haddon Township High School was evacuated Friday after a student brought in an antique plate that the youth’s mother said was glazed with radioactive uranium.
Students and staffers left the building after officials learned around 11:15 a.m. that a student “had brought into the school a potentially dangerous substance,” said Robert J. Fisicaro, the district’s superintendent.
“Local police, fire, and a hazardous materials team arrived on the scene and immediately investigated the situation, and secured the building,” he said in a statement. ....
