The County of Los Angeles Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and Higher Ground Los Angeles are teaming up with Carry The Load, a nonprofit organization that originated to restore the true meaning of Memorial Day and now honors fallen service members, first responders, and their families.
Two dozen volunteers and walkers in Roseville joined in a nationwide relay effort that is winding its way through Placer, Sacramento and Yolo counties Tuesday.The relay is part of the the Carry the Load organization, a nonprofit mission aimed at restoring the true meaning of Memorial Day. This is day six. The calves are a little sore, but we keep on moving, said Andy Madrano, a relay leader for the West Coast route.Carry the Load was formed in 2011 after veteran U.S. Navy SEALs Clint Bruce and Stephen Holley returned from post-9/11 active duty and felt that people didn t care about the sacrifices of those who served, according to the group s website. Memorial Day is about more than barbecues, said Madrano.So for the past decade, this relay has raised awareness and fundraising to highlight the meaning of the holiday and to support veterans and military families.Nearly two dozen people signed up to join the Roseville leg of the relay from the Lowe s parking lot to Maidu Park.
