The US Navy s Seventh Fleet did nothing illegal by holding operations in India s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) a few days ago, but it could have avoided publicly thumbing its nose at India, former Union Minister and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has said. The US can be accused of not respecting our sensibilities but not of breaking international law, he said.
In a series of tweets today, Mr Tharoor said there was nothing in the United Nations Convention for the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS, the Law of the Sea) that backs India s stand on freedom of navigation through the EEZ. ....

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates U.S. prosecutors have charged the son of a civilian Navy staffer in Bahrain over her stabbing death in the Mideast island kingdom.
Federal court documents accuse Giovonni Z. Pope, 27, of stabbing his mother to death at her off-base apartment on Jan. 31. Contact details for Pope could not be immediately found and his listed public defender declined to comment Saturday.
Court documents only identify his mother by the initials E.A., describing her as a civilian Defense Department employee at Naval Support Activity Bahrain, the home of the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet. She had worked there since September 2017. ....

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates The United States called Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates “major security partners” early Saturday, a previously unheard of designation for the two countries home to major American military operations.
A White House statement tied the designation to Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates normalizing ties to Israel, saying it “reflects their extraordinary courage, determination and leadership.” It also noted the two countries long have taken part in U.S. military exercises. ....

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates Iran fired cruise missiles Thursday as part of a naval drill in the Gulf of Oman, state media reported, under surveillance of what appeared to be a U.S. nuclear submarine dispatched to the region amid heightened tensions between the countries.
Helicopter footage of the exercise released by Iran’s navy showed what resembled an Ohio-class guided-missile submarine, the USS Georgia, which the U.S. Navy last month said had been sent to the Persian Gulf a rare announcement aimed at underscoring American military might in the region. ....
