Churches in Egypt: Harassed Islands in a Sea of Mosques

According to a May 19, 2021 Arabic-language report, Egypt’s Ministry of Endowments just announced that, since September 2020, 1,413 mosques 1,315 of which are brand new were opened in the North Africa nation.
This announcement underscores the double standards that Christians and Muslims can expect in Egypt.  For inasmuch as mosques proliferate all throughout the nation, building new or even renovating old churches is like pulling teeth for Copts.
According to one detailed study by author Adel Guindy, “there is one church per 5,800 Orthodox Copts”;  this forces many Christians “to travel far distances outside of their towns for religious services (baptism, marriage, funerals, and regular mass).” On the other hand, based on the number of mosques in Egypt (114,000 in 2016, more now) and Egypt’s estimated Muslim population, there is about one mosque for every 700 Muslims. For the second successive year, Muslims will mark the holy month in the midst of coronavirus.  While many have found ways to adapt to the new normal and the rollout of vaccines has helped stymie the rise in cases in some countries, it is certain that the Muslim holy month will be affected. 
Middle East Eye takes a look at some of the ways Ramadan will be different for worshippers this year.
How preparations are taking shape 
Scheduled to begin on or around Monday 12 April, Ramadan is the most revered month in the Islamic calendar. Preparations for the holy month, which Muslims believe is when God revealed the first verses of the Quran to the Prophet Mohammed, start weeks in advance. Some Muslims choose to spend the weeks prior to Ramadan completing optional fasts and spiritually preparing for the holy month. Egypt’s Ministry of Endowment announced the inauguration of an international center for interfaith dialogue to consolidate the foundations of coexistence and encourage cultural exchange in the world.
The proceedings of the 31st International Conference of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, the “Interfaith and Intercultural Dialogue”, were concluded on Sunday under the auspices of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and in the presence of prominent figures and scholars from Arab and African countries.
At the concluding session, participants said constructive dialogue is the best mean to prevent the conflicts between cultures and civilizations. ....
