Former Mississippi Gov. William Winter, who championed education initiatives, job creation, and racial harmony throughout his life, died Friday Dec. 18, 2020, at age 97. 
Known as Mississippi’s Education Governor, Winter secured passage of landmark educational initiatives in 1982 bringing kindergartens, compulsory school attendance, and a range of other key reforms to a state plagued by poverty and illiteracy. During his remarkable 75 years of public service, Winter linked education with economic development in the nation’s poorest state, observing, “The road out of the poor house, runs past the school house.” ....

City of Jackson unveils new planetarium
JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Jackson is gearing up for its 200th anniversary, and city officials are hoping for a $9 million gift from the Mississippi Legislature.
As part of its 2021 legislative agenda, Jackson is seeking $9 million to help fund what officials call the “Jackson 200 Project.”
Jackson 200 is not one development but four smaller projects designed to improve the quality of life for residents and visitors.
It includes renovations of Smith Park, Thalia Mara Hall and the Russell C. Davis Planetarium. Also included are plans to buy or lease and renovate another downtown building to house the Eudora Welty Library. ....

William F. Winter, a Mississippi politician who stood athwart the racism of many of his fellow white Democrats during the civil rights era and used his single term as governor to address injustice in the state’s education system, died on Friday at his home in Jackson, Miss. He was 97. ....

For three hours I ve been thrusting my body past the breaking waves on the northernmost beach in Tel Aviv, where the surfers go, and the lifeguards keep calling little girl!
