While US federal government employees mostly remained resilient and engaged during the COVID-19 pandemic, there were “meaningful declines” in their assessment of service delivery, according to an annual staff survey.
“Despite the unprecedented workplace challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, federal workers adapted quickly to their new realities, continuing to work on behalf of the American people, taking on additional and sometimes new work to ensure critical services have been available to the public,” said Kathleen McGettigan, acting director of OPM. ....

Feds’ Engagement and Job Satisfaction Rises Despite or Because of Pandemic
Officials who administered the annual Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey warned against making sweeping conclusions about the 2020 results, due to changes in the survey s timing and some of its content.
Federal employees reported the biggest increase in their engagement and job satisfaction in more than a decade when they took the government’s annual survey of workplace attitudes last fall, although officials warned against making sweeping conclusions based on the data.
The Office of Personnel Management on Monday announced the results of the 2020 Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey, which was delayed twice last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Across the federal government, employee engagement increased by four points from 2019 to 72 out of 100, while the global satisfaction index, which seeks to measure employees’ happiness with their job ....

The Office of Personnel Management released governmentwide results from its annual employee survey on Monday, opening a window into views on their engagement and satisfaction at work, as well as insight on the shift to telework during the pandemic.
The Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey was postponed twice last year because of the pandemic before rolling out in September. Its content also changed, with new sections on the pandemic added and the usual recurring sections streamlined. Overall, 624,800 feds from 82 agencies participated.
Overall, feds rated their experiences highly. The governmentwide global satisfaction went up four points to 69%. The overall employee engagement index, an average of three sections focused on employees relationship with their supervisors, perception of agency leadership and work experience, went up to 72%, as compared to 68% in 2019. ....

The COVID-19 pandemic added to the workload for nearly half of federal employees and was highly disruptive to almost a quarter, but those employees still felt very satisfied and supported in their jobs, according to results of the 2020 Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey released by the Office of Personnel Management April 26.
“The federal workforce is made up of dedicated and hardworking individuals who are motivated by the opportunity to make a positive impact through their public service,” said OPM acting Director Kathleen McGettigan in a news release. ....

Federal employees who moved to either full- or part-time telework during the COVID-19 pandemic reported higher engagement and satisfaction with their jobs than those who could not work remotely, according to results of the Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey released April 26.
The overall employee engagement score for feds who worked three or more days of telework a week was 76 percent compared with only 62.5 percent engagement for those employees who could not telework. ....
