Cambodia expands monitoring of social media to private messaging apps, citing fake news

Cambodia has expanded government monitoring of
social media to include apps like
TikTok, WhatsApp and Telegram in a bid to target
fake news. Though intended in part to combat misinformation about COVID-19, the
announcement has raised concerns about a new wave of censorship of independent media
and political opposition in the country.
Cambodia’s
Information Ministry is expanding its monitoring of social media to messaging apps like
WhatsApp and Telegram, as well as TikTok. The government has said that it made the
decision out of concern about fake news regarding COVID-19.

US military restarts Guantanamo case over Bali bombings, prompting questions

The Pentagon has suddenly
moved to push the trial forward after previously rejecting the case in 2017.
The timing of the decision has
prompted questions as the case was on hold throughout the Trump administration
and President Joe Biden’s administration has announced intentions to close the
infamous prison. It is the first new case at Guantánamo Bay since 2014.
The US military may be
trying to close the case as it expects scrutiny from the Biden administration
over its questionable interrogation methods, including torture.
The case may have little to do with the Indonesian and Malaysian governments as it is not on their radar.  ....

Thailand's COVID-19 vaccine plans may become central to anti-monarchy protests

The Thai government is using the controversial lese majeste law to target critics of the monarchy after they demanded clarity about the role of a company owned by the king in the country’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout. The situation is not likely to help save the palace’s reputation or silence its critics.
In
Thailand, the debate over the timely availability and distribution of a COVID-19
vaccine has become politicized as the country’s monarchy faces accusations of using
a deal with AstraZeneca to shore up its legitimacy and
improve public opinion of the king.

Misinformation on side effects hurts Thailand's COVID-19 vaccine plans

Thailand has ordered millions of doses
of COVID-19 vaccines from
AstraZeneca
and Sinovac Biotech. However, misinformation about safety concerns may hinder the country’s
planned mass immunization campaign.
Thailand
has rolled out plans to produce millions of doses of COVID-19 vaccines
domestically, in addition to purchasing some doses from AstraZeneca and
Sinovac. Though the Thai government has
not confirmed when its mass inoculation
program will begin, it’s now working to address public concerns about vaccine
side effects stemming in part to misinformation spread largely online.

Mass trial of Cambodian opposition points to Hun Sen's future plans for repression

Cambodia’s courts have begun a mass
trial against supporters and members of the
country’s main opposition party, the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP).
Prime Minister Hun Sen has substantially
increased persecution of his political opponents in a bid to stay in power and
prepare for the next general election in 2023 by blocking the opposition. The
CNRP has been banned since 2017.
Several
Southeast Asian countries, particularly
Thailand, are helping Hun Sen in his political oppression and efforts to
sideline key democratic forces.
