Every Day is Earth Day for a Maryland Farmer

For my fellow farmers who live and work off of the land, every day is Earth Day.
Given our proximity to the Chesapeake Bay, water quality and resource conservation are always front and center for farmers across the watershed.
In celebration of Earth Day, I had the pleasure of hosting a virtual meeting with my counterparts from the bay states and federal partners from the USDA and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to discuss our shared priorities as we work toward our Watershed Implementation Plan Phase III goals.
This kind of collaboration is key to meeting the challenges facing our industry and the environment, which is why I am proud to announce that the Maryland Department of Agriculture has become the first state agency to endorse the U.S. Farmers and Ranchers in Action Decade of Ag Vision. ....

In celebration of Earth Day, I had the pleasure of hosting a virtual meeting with my counterparts from the Bay states and federal partners from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, to discuss our shared priorities as we work toward our Watershed Implementation Plan (WIP) Phase III goals.
This kind of collaboration is key to meeting the challenges facing our industry and the environment, which is why I am proud to announce that the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) has become the first state agency to endorse the U.S. Farmers and Ranchers in Action (USFRA) Decade of Ag Vision. This is the first sector-wide movement to align a shared vision for the next decade centered around investing in the next generation of ....

Division of Soil and Water Conservation Opportunities for Farmers of Color

Racial Diversity of Farmers in Virginia
From row crops to vegetables, cattle to chickens, farmers of every major racial demographic play an essential role in agricultural production as well as soil and water conservation throughout Virginia. The most recent Census of Agriculture conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 2017 indicated that Virginia had over 2,500 farmers of color involved in some form of agricultural production. African Americans and Latino farmers make up the majority of this sizable group of Virginia farmers. Other groups represented include Asian American, Native American and Native Hawaiian farmers.
The map below shows the distribution of farmers of color throughout the commonwealth according to the 2017 Census of Agriculture. From north to south, east to west, these farmers make up an important part of Virginia s agricultural and economic fabric. They also play a critical role in the Division of Soil and Water Conservation s efforts to reduce ....

Easterday-Tyson Saga Shows: Counting 200K Cattle Isn't Easy, Especially When They Might Not Exist

Courtesy of Franklin County, Washington
Just how do you miss 200,000 phantom cattle over several years? That’s what some people in the Columbia Basin cattle-feeding industry are wondering in an ongoing saga between Tyson Fresh Meats and Easterday Ranches.
“It’s hard to believe,” says Mike DeTray, who runs a 4,000-head operation outside of George, Wash.
An accurate count of cattle is essential to cracking the case of Easterday Ranches and Easterday Farms two arms of the large Easterday family empire, which Tyson Fresh Meats has accused of inventing and feeding 200,000 cattle on paper. After Tyson filed suit seeking $225 million, Easterday filed for federal bankruptcy. ....
