Smart City funds spent, but lakes remain dirty | Coimbatore News

COIMBATORE: Just months after they were opened to the public, five lakes that were rejuvenated and beautified at a cost of Rs 217.06 crore from the Smart Cities Mission, have lost their charm due to lack of maintenance.
Former city corporation commissioner P Kumaravel Pandian had hurriedly inaugurated a part of Ukkadam Periyakulam, Valankulam, Selvachinthamni lake, and Selvampathy and Kumarasamy lakes on February 26, hours before the model code of conduct was imposed for the assembly election.
TOI found thriving weeds threatening to take over the landscape on Periyakulam bund. Water hyacinths have clogged up the floating jetty, where the corporation had planned to launch a boat service. As garbage bins are conspicuously absent, visitors throw waste along the bund. As only two of the gates are open, people were found jumping over the railing. ....

Wall around Periyakulam Lake collapses in rain | Coimbatore News

Coimbatore: A portion of the wall around Ukkadam Periyakulam’s walking track collapsed during the rain on Wednesday night.
The 12 feet-high wall was constructed around the track’s outer perimeter six months ago as part of the Smart City project. Almost 50 feet of the wall that runs along Anna Nagar Road in Cheran Nagar collapsed during the 15mm rainfall. Other portions have developed cracks.
“The wall collapsed and fell on barren land. No one was injured because it occurred at midnight. On normal days, local boys play cricket on the ground and people use it to graze cows,” said J Sadhiq, a commuter. The corporation removed the debris around 1.30pm on Thursday. ....

Easy to find water in city than in rural areas: Borewell players | Coimbatore News

Coimbatore: Borewell players said groundwater was available at a lower depth in urban areas, compared to rural areas in the district.
S K Shreedharan, proprietor of City Borewells, said they could find water at a depth of 60ft this year, compared to 90ft in 2017. “But 60ft is adequate only in places such as Ganapathy, Peelamedu, Avarampalayam and Podanur. As we move south to places such as Chettipalayam and Eachanari, we have to drill up to 400ft deep to find water and 300ft near agricultural lands at Sulur and Periyanaickenpalayam and 1,300ft at Pappampatti,” he said.
According to the borewell players, topography makes a difference, because the harder the rock formations below the soil, the deeper they have to drill for water. “In the heart of the city, rock formations are softer and buried deep. As we move south, they are harder and spotted at a lower depth,” Shreedharan said. ....
