Most Kenyans who have a well-paying job live a comfortable life, yet shudder at the thought of retirement. But once retirement beckons, many end up making grave financial blunders that not only shorten their sunset years, but also make their lives long and miserable.
Some retirees have to struggle to put food on the table yet they were controlling huge amounts of money during and immediately after employment.
Njoroge Gatimu, 72, was retired from a tour company where he worked as a driver for many years.
“Life has changed drastically. If I knew Covid would strike, I could have started a business or built some rental houses. I have not finished educating my children. The last born had just joined university. I’m operating a small shop, from which I hope to raise school fees,” the father of nine told the Nairobian. ....

We will convert Uhuru Park into ‘little Dubai’ – Badi

The Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) is planning to renovate Uhuru Park so that city residents can use it during this year’s Christmas season instead of travelling upcountry.
This is according to NMS Director General Mohammed Badi, who revealed that his team is currently attending a workshop in Naivasha to deliberate on the project.
Badi revealed this during signing of Memorandum of Understanding between NMS and UN-Habitat for the Nairobi River regeneration initiative at the recently rehabilitated Michuki Park.
“We are already starting various projects in green spaces like we see Uhuru Park is soon transforming into a modern recreation center. At the moment we are doing a workshop in Naivasha on that and soon the project will begin” ....

Wangari Maathai, née en 1940 au Kenya, a été la première africaine à recevoir le prix Nobel de la paix pour son action en faveur de l’environnement, de l’émancipation des femmes et de la sécurité alimentaire. Constatant que la désertification et l’érosion des sols causent la famine et la pauvreté des populations rurales du Kenya, elle crée en 1977 le Mouvement de la ceinture verte, destiné à reboiser les terres et géré par les femmes des villages.
