Grant to help make Herefordshire farms more nature friendly


HWT said the funds will, among other things, allow them to recruit new staff and improve public access and education at nature reserves within Herefordshire’s Lugg Valley wetlands.
A key area of work for the trust is to map, support and improve places designated ‘Local Wildlife Sites’.
These are wildlife-rich habitats, usually in private ownership, with landowners often unaware of these places’ importance.
HWT will work with project partners Herefordshire Meadows to survey and support new sites through management plans across the county.
HWT said the funding also allows them to continue and extend their work with landowners, supporting work along the Yazor Brook in Hereford and funding a farm advisor to help farmers in making their farms more wildlife friendly and sustainable. ....

The Green council’s decision to remove a section of Europe’s longest green wall to build a cycle lane has caused great distress to residents and environmentalists this week.
The living wall along Madeira Drive was planted by the Victorians in the 1870s and is also a wildlife reserve listed in council planning documents. It has grown and survived intact in this city for a century and a half.
But this week, for the first time in 150 years, the green wall was exposed when the council, without notice severed a section to build a cycle lane.
The damage, relayed in shocking pictures published in The Argus, includes about eight Japanese spindle plants, planted in 1872 and a large fig tree which were cut down by the council. ....
