This week, localities nationwide recognized the work economic developers do to create vibrant communities with strong economies during National Economic Development Week, which runs from May 9 to 15. Locally, economic officials have powered through an unprecedented pandemic and still assisted in company expansions and openings, provided grants to businesses and helped them retain their workforce. In 2020, the Lynchburg Office of Economic Development and Tourism assisted multiple companies, including Bausch + Lomb, which invested more than $35 million to expand its manufacturing facility to provide U.S. distribution for its contact lens products and create 79 new jobs over the next five years. In January 2020, Flowers Foods, one of the nation’s largest producers of packaged baked foods, announced a $25 million investment to expand and transform its Lynchburg bakery into an organic facility, creating 15 new jobs. In Bergen County, the issue involves a major $80 million renovation of the historic Bergen County Justice Center. Officials say the project is a multi-year effort that started prior to the county’s current administration taking office and encompasses multiple phases of renovation and rehabilitation of the entire court facility.

Commissioners are anticipated to authorize $120 million in bonds for the government complex April 22. UNION COUNTY, NJ The county Board of Commissioners will provide $16.75 million to the Union County Improvement Authority to plan and design a new county government complex in Elizabeth. The county is still in negotiations to select a developer for the project. The two buildings are planned for the site of the county’s motor vehicle services division at 61-99 West Grand St. County officials have said the project will let the county move all its administrative services into two new buildings, and is expected to cost more than $100 million but eliminate rent the county pays for existing office space.

If New Jersey can reach its goal of 330,000 registered electric vehicles by 2025, then the state could make significant gains in accomplishing the Governor’s goal of 100% clean energy by 2050. As of now, however, there are roughly 34,000 electric vehicles registered in New Jersey, so there is a long way to go.
