The Ministry of Local Government through the Municipal Councils continues to ensure that all Municipal Market Vendors around the country receive the COVID-19 vaccine. This is in light of the Government’s ‘No Jab No Job’ policy.
 
‘‘Since experiencing the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Municipal Councils have implemented a number of safety measures for all Fijians. The Municipal Councils have supported the Ministry of Health in the awareness programme, decontamination of sites and in the vaccination campaigns. Drive-thru sites were set up for vaccination and swabbing making it convenient and safer for the people,’’ said the Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar. ....

STATEMENT FROM THE MINISTRY OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT

The Ministry of Local Government is in consultation with all Municipal Councils nationwide regarding Policy reforms and initiatives for the new fiscal year 2021-2022.
 
One of the major changes for the Councils is the change in the financial year, which will now be aligned with the Government’s fiscal year beginning from 1 August 2021 to 31 July 2022. This modification is by virtue of an amendment to the Local Government Act 1972. The change in financial year will align budget planning and financial reporting by the Councils with that of the Government, to ensure easier acquittal processes for projects and grants which is funded by the State. ....

City and Town rates arrears for 13 municipal councils as of January 31 was approximately $40 million, says Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar
Kumar made the revelation in parliament today.
She said the councils managed to recover some rates as the municipal councils enforced a rates collection plan.
She said rates profiling was one of the major exercises conducted by the municipal councils which were crucial to understanding whether ratepayers are able to pay their rates.
She said they have come across situations where ratepayers have got properties on rent but yet they are not paying the rates.
“Other cases where people have migrated, they have left their properties in Suva and other places which are fetching them rent but they are not clearing their rates, so surely some stringent methods are required to deal with such matters. ....
