President Kersti Kaljulaid s decision Thursday to strip former cross-country ski star Andrus Veerpalu of his two state decorations brings the total number of individuals so divested of their awards to fourteen. President Kaljulaid has recalled a total of four state awards from recipients in her tenure so far. Toomas Hendrik Ilves took away the remaining 10, during his two-term stint as president, 2006-2016. Ilves predecessors, Arnold Rüütel and, before him, Lennart Meri, doled out state awards perhaps more prolifically, and many of those who have been demoted in this way – including Andrus Veerpalu – had received their awards during the first two presidents terms. ....

Despite the coronavirus pandemic putting an end to travel and public gatherings, it did not lessen Russia s activity in its operations against Estonia, the Internal Security Service (ISS) wrote in its yearbook. At the height of the pandemic, the Kremlin s influence and intelligence activities against Estonia did not decrease. Closed borders and restrictions on public gatherings led local leaders of the Kremlin s policies of division to go online, ISS Director General Arnold Sinisalu wrote. Sinisalu noted that Russian espionage is a continuous and permanent threat to Estonia. The yearbook reads that in the turbulent coronavirus situation, local Kremlin followers saw an opportunity to to spread their messages as they intensified their influence activities on social media . ....

A customs official who accepted bribes from a customs agent for prompt clearance was handed a prison sentence on Friday by Pärnu County Court. The 45-year-old official who misused his official position was given a four-year jail sentence, of which he must immediately serve two months. The rest of the jail sentence is conditional with a four-year probation term. The bribe-giver, a 46-year-old man active in customs brokerage, was given a sentence of three years in jail. Just like the official, he must immediately serve two months in prison and the rest of the prison term is conditional with a three-year probation term. ....
