NEW YORK – New York Attorney General Letitia James today released a report detailing the results of her office’s wide-ranging investigation into fake, public comments submitted to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in a 2017 proceeding to repeal net neutrality rules . New York AG Investigation Report Finding 18 Million Fake Comments on FCC Net Neutrality Rulemaking

On Thursday, New York Attorney General (AG) Letitia James announced that her office has released a report detailing her office’s investigation into fake public comments submitted for the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) 2017 proceeding to repeal net neutrality rules, and securing $4.4 million in penalties and disgorgement from the violators.
According to the investigation, there was “widespread fraud” and “abusive practices used to sway government policy – using masses of comments and messages to create the false impression of popular support.” Specifically, AG James noted that the end of investigation into three companies, namely, Fluent Inc., Opt-Intelligence Inc., and React2Media Inc., concludes inquiry into these companies over their “millions of fake comments submitted in the 2017 net neutrality proceeding.” In these companies’ agreement with the OAG, they are required to adopt comprehensive reforms for ....

NY AG: Broadband industry behind fake FCC comments

The Office of the New York Attorney General said in a new report that a campaign funded by the broadband industry submitted millions of fake comments supporting the 2017 repeal of net neutrality.
The Federal Communications Commission’s contentious 2017 repeal undid Obama-era rules that barred internet service providers from slowing or blocking websites and apps or charging companies more for faster speeds to consumers. The industry had sued to stop these rules during the Obama administration but lost.
The proceeding generated a record-breaking number of comments more than 22 million and nearly 18 million were fake, the attorney general’s office found. It has long been known that the tally included fake comments. ....
