Partially sighted may be at higher risk of dementia

Older people with vision loss are significantly more likely to suffer mild cognitive impairment, which can be a precursor to dementia, according to a new study published in the journal Ageing Clinical and Experimental Research.
The research by Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) examined World Health Organisation data on more than 32,000 people and found that people with loss in both near and far vision were 1.7 times more likely to suffer from mild cognitive impairment.
People with impairment of their near vision were 1.3 times more likely to suffer from mild cognitive impairment than someone with no vision impairment.
However, people who reported only loss of their far vision did not appear to have an increased risk. ....

Cigarettes contain poisonous chemicals such as ammonia which is used to boost the impact of nicotine in them.
Furthermore, cigarette smoke contains high levels of carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide – the chemical used in killing Jews in the gas chambers in Nazi Germany during World War II.
Notwithstanding these facts, cigarette manufacturers asserted that cigarette is safe to smoke.
In 1967, the then US Surgeon, General William Stewart, stated that the hazards of smoking had “gone beyond the probable to the point of demonstrated fact” and in 1976, F. Byrd, President of the American Cancer Society stated that cigarettes should be regarded as ‘unique’ among legal consumer products in that they posed a health hazard even if used “properly and prudently”. ....

1.7M health workers eligible for Covid-19 vaccination

IN THE initial vaccination priority list released by the Department of Health (DOH), more than 1.7 million frontline health workers are eligible to be vaccinated.
During the online Learning Session on Reporting for Covid-19 Vaccine Deployment Plan organized by DOH on January 26, 2021, Health Undersecretary Myrna Cabotaje said the National Deployment and Vaccination Plan of the Philippine follows the World Health Organization (WHO) Study on Global Ageing and Adult Health (Sage) in terms of the distribution and deployment of the vaccine.
In her presentation, she said 1,762,994 frontline health workers will be eligible for the vaccination. This already includes those working in the public and private health facilities, the public health workers and local government unit (LGU) contact tracers, barangay health workers, and those working for the departments of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Education (DepEd), Interior and Local Govern ....
