Academic contributes to first global classification of Earth’s ecosystems
A University of Plymouth researcher has contributed to the first-ever comprehensive system for classifying and mapping all the ecosystems on Earth.
The Global Typology of Ecosystems, published by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), is designed to allow for more coordinated and effective approaches to conservation management.
It was developed by more than 100 ecosystem scientists representing the IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management and 85 scientific institutions.
Among them was Dr Louise Firth, Lecturer in Marine Ecology in the University’s School of Biological and Marine Sciences, who contributed her expertise in artificial shorelines and eco-engineering. ....

It’s Long Past Time for the U.S. to Ratify the ‘Treaty of Life’
Nearly three decades after it emerged from the landmark “Earth Summit” in Rio de Janeiro, the Convention on Biological Diversity has been ratified by 196 countries; the United States is the sole remaining holdout. This failure of global leadership is unconscionable and self-defeating, given continued, catastrophic declines in biodiversity that could see roughly 1 million species disappear in the coming decades. America must finally become party to this “Treaty of Life.” ....

FEATURE: Diverse agricultural landscapes for conservation of biodiversity and resilience of food systems

Researchers, NGOs and businesses show how to transform the global food system, locally.
During the Global Landscapes Forum’s Biodiversity Digital Conference 2020, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) brought together practitioners from four projects funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety through its International Climate Initiative for a global learning and knowledge-exchange event.
Public- and private-sector experts from both the global South and the global North shared their experience and insights into the economic gains of biodiversity-friendly food production.
The COVID-19 pandemic has starkly revealed the vulnerability of the world’s food systems to shocks. The post-COVID decade must be managed in a way that builds future resilience. Local and global circular economies that advance biodiverse agricultural landscapes are the way forward. ....
