Crunch, crack, splinter, grind – this is the sound of progress; the noise emitted as a JCB uproots and flattens a stretch of hedgerow, sending a startled rabbit scurrying for safety.
Just within the Oxford ring road, a field is being converted into a new urban development; grass and trees are being modernised into concrete and steel. Welcome to Oxford North, a 64-acre greenfield site that will soon accommodate offices, laboratories and new homes, a venture described by the local paper as “Oxford’s Silicon Valley”. After a process of nearly a decade, preparatory work has now begun removing medieval hedgerows before the birds’ breeding season begins. ....
