Mike Conrad's Fertile Soil Suite Debuts This Sunday In Cedar Falls

Join the Iowa Jazz Composers Orchestra for the premiere of a new jazz suite Sunday, June 6 at 6 p.m. in Cedar Falls at the River Place Plaza stage.
Sunday evening, June 6, between 6 and 7:30 p.m., grab your folding chair, blankets, picnic basket, liquid libations and friends. The Iowa Jazz Composers Orchestra will premiere “Fertile Soil Suite” and other new jazz works by Iowa composers in Cedar Falls.
The “Fertile Soil Suite” is finally unearthed this Sunday evening at 6 at a free concert held at the River Place Plaza’s outdoor amphitheater stage in downtown Cedar Falls.
Mike Conrad, an award-winning jazz composer and artistic director, founded the IJCO and composed his “Fertile Soil Suite” especially for the IJCO and its players. ....

Jazz fest goes online

For the first time in its 54-year history, the University of Idahoâs Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival will be held completely online.
UI School of Music Director Vanessa Sielert, who also serves as education adviser for the festival, said organizers made changes to this yearâs program to comply with pandemic restrictions. The festival is set for Feb. 25 through 27.
Sielert said one major change is there will be no competitive events included in this yearâs program. Instead, organizers focused on building educational workshops and creating a slightly unorthodox online concert series.
Online workshops will be offered to soloists, combos and large ensembles who will send in recorded video performances that will be reviewed by adjudicators, including music educators and professional performers from across the country. There are many yard signs in Iowa City proclaiming it The Greatest Small City of the Arts. While this is a recent official designation, the residents of Coralville, North Liberty, and Iowa City have long recognized this is a unique part of the state, where the fine arts thrive and are appreciated.
Formed in 1916, the Music Study Club’s focus has always been on programs featuring musical presentations, including verbal historical perspectives by the performers. Currently, the programs feature a combination of UI School of Music faculty and community members. The club has long recognized the importance of providing financial support to young musicians and began a scholarship program in 1937. They currently award a high school string scholarship ....
