Latinx Files: Cinco de Mayo means one thing, and it s not margaritas

I grumbled the moment my editor suggested I write about Cinco de Mayo this week. It’s not that I’m against the holiday or the way it’s celebrated. Sure, any mention of the word “drinko” would set me off on a tirade about cultural appropriation when I was younger. But as I’ve gotten older and with the advent of I largely live in a world free of obnoxious people looking for an excuse to get drunk under the guise of celebrating my Mexican heritage, so there’s no need to get on my soapbox about it. My thoughts on this holiday aren’t that deep. (In addition to any variant on “Cinco de Mayo,” my muted words include the phrase “unpopular opinion,” the hashtag #MayTheFourthBeWithYou and “Erewhon,” the super bougie L.A. supermarket.)

Sunday Notes: A J Hinch Knows the Value of an Out (and Doesn t Fear Twitter)

February 28, 2021 Tigers manager A.J. Hinch addressed the importance of being aggressive on the base paths during his Saturday morning media session. What he shared included the following, which I quoted on Twitter: “Your WAR gets dinged whenever you get thrown out on the bases. It’s not valued. People are very aware… players are very aware of that. Winning baseball is good for your WAR too, even if it’s not quantifiable.” Almost immediately, people began responding critically, opining that Hinch was (pun intended) off base. Feeling that more context was in order I’d prefaced the original Tweet by noting the subject at hand I added that Hinch also said that if you’re safe every time, you’re probably not being aggressive enough.

You can fool most of the people most of the time. P. T. Barnum. by Paul Haeder / December 24th, 2020 Someone said, “If you don’t have something nice to say about someone, don’t say anything.” Oh, the idiocy of America!! Shit-dog, this country, now, and going back when I was in my teens (13 when my family moved us from Paris, France, to Arizona – of all places), well, lying, cheating, achy-breaky heart, don’t you know, thieving, scamming, and, well, bombing (military and economic), that’s what it is, but you won’t get that from those lying cheating bullshitting PR-spinning, pass-the-hat, money-loving politicians on both sides of the manure pile.
