Across Greater Sydney, residents have spent mornings holding their breath for the latest announcement on the COVID-19 case numbers. Whichever side of the fence we are on, whether pro- or anti-lockdown, we understand that our future rests on the decisions the state government is making right now. We also understand that one of the key elements in the government’s response, and one which will have both short- and long-term consequences, is the decision regarding the reopening of schools.

The Australian state of New South Wales has recorded 35 new Covid-19 cases in the 24 hours to 8pm on Sunday (local time), and the Premier says the next couple of days will be “absolutely critical” in determining whether Greater Sydney’s lockdown is extended. “I foreshadowed a few days ago that the numbers were likely to bounce around, and that is what we have seen overnight,” Premier Gladys Berejiklan said. Twenty-four of the cases were in isolation for their entire infectious period and four cases were in isolation for part of their infectious period, meaning seven cases were infectious in the community.
Positive cases have been confirmed to have worked at a construction site in Sydney s west.
Anyone who worked at the construction site at 74 Aurelia Street at Toongabbie from 7am to 12pm from June 28 until July 2 is also close contact. This again highlights that we do have essential activities continuing and we do again urge everyone to be very vigilant for signs and symptoms, Dr Chant said. We are also asking the household contacts of those who attended these three construction sites to also immediately get tested and isolate until they receive a negative result.
Aged care residents among today s cases
“Some of the cases today are a result of issues or result of incidents where people have done the wrong thing. I do implore everybody to keep at it. Let’s not give up.”
Berejiklian would not be drawn on whether the lockdown would be extended in light of the number of daily cases refusing to drop, instead imploring residents to follow the public health orders.
“I know everybody is keen to know what is going to happen beyond Friday’s lockdown, as am I, but what I can tell you with certainty is that the next couple of days will be absolutely critical in allowing our health experts to collate the data that we’ve had in the last week and then to present their advice to government.”

Of today’s 35 new locally acquired cases, 24 were in isolation throughout their infectious periods and four cases were in isolation for part of their infectious period. Seven cases were infectious in the community.
There are two new cases in residents of SummitCare Baulkham Hills aged care facility, bringing the total number of cases associated with the aged care facility to five. Of the two new cases, both women in their 70s, one resident is fully vaccinated, and one has not been vaccinated. The three previously reported cases were fully vaccinated.
Out of an abundance of caution all five residents have been transferred to Westmead Hospital for observation. The wife of one of the cases, who also resides at the aged care facility, is also now at Westmead Hospital. To date, she has returned a negative COVID-19 test result.
