The Australian state of New South Wales has recorded 35 new Covid-19 cases in the 24 hours to 8pm on Sunday (local time), and the Premier says the next couple of days will be “absolutely critical” in determining whether Greater Sydney’s lockdown is extended. “I foreshadowed a few days ago that the numbers were likely to bounce around, and that is what we have seen overnight,” Premier Gladys Berejiklan said. Twenty-four of the cases were in isolation for their entire infectious period and four cases were in isolation for part of their infectious period, meaning seven cases were infectious in the community.
Thirty-three of the cases were linked to known cases and two remain under investigation.
Three of the cases were linked to a gathering at the Meriton in Waterloo on June 26, when the inner Sydney suburb was under stay-at-home rules.
Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant said authorities believed it was a small group – fewer than dozens - and thanked attendees for coming forward for testing.
“It is important to remember that young people themselves can get sick and be hospitalised following COVID,” Dr Chant said. “So whilst it is that older people are going to be more likely to have severe outcomes from COVID – hospitalisation and death – I want to remind young people that they too might be seriously impacted.”
