Caloocan officials claim fake news being spread against them as election season nears

In a video posted on Mayor Oca Malapitan’s Facebook page on Monday, the local chief executive along with 1st District Rep. Along Malapitan, City Administrator Oliver Hernandez, several barangay chairmen and other high-ranking city officials called on the public to “stop fake news.”
Malapitan also said there is no place for politics in the city right now as the country still grapples with the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
“Walang lugar ang politika sa labang ito. Sapagkat walang pinipiling kulay ang COVID-19 (Politics has no place in this fight against pandemic because COVID-19 sees no political affiliation),” he said. “Magkaisa tayo, unahin natin ang kapakanan ng tao (Let’s unite and prioritize our people).” ....

MANILA, Philippines While other local government units in Metro Manila are busy preparing for the arrival of COVID-19 vaccines, Caloocan officials are grappling with a political rift amid the pandemic.
Mayor Oscar Malapitan is at odds with five members of the city council who broke away from the majority to ally with his political rival, Rep. Edgar Erice.
The councilors composing the newly formed opposition posted a video on social media alleging the overpriced purchase of 64,646 computer tablets distributed to students for distance learning.
Former majority leader Rose Mercado and her fellow councilors PJ Malonzo, Alou Nubla, Carding Bagus and Alex Mangasar said the gadgets worth P318.7 million were defective in terms of internet connectivity and battery life. ....
