Girl Scout's project at Kansas Capitol remembers COVID-19 deaths


On the day of her junior prom, Anna Newcome woke up early, loaded several boxes into trucks and drove over to the Kansas Statehouse with friends, family and other volunteers to plant one felt-fabric rose for each of the 5,000 Kansans killed by COVID-19.
For her Girl Scout Gold Award leadership project, Newcome had committed to organizing Kansas s installment of the national Rose River Memorial, a project by international artist Marcos Lutyens to honor each life lost to COVID-19.
Newcome, a junior at Topeka West, had first started planning the project about four months ago, holding Zoom conferences and sending emails to people and organizations across the state who would help her realize the ambitious project. ....

New Yorker Kristina Libby began placing heart-shaped flower wreaths in prominent sites across the city last April, when the first wave of the pandemic was at its terrifying height.
“I laid a heart because I was grieving and I wanted to do something to recognize our losses,” the artist said in a statement. “Community matters now more than ever, and one way we can grow community is by grieving together.”

Adorning the entryway of the Orange County Museum of Art through Sunday is an art installation whose vibrancy takes on a poignant new meaning when viewers contemplate the message behind it.
A swath of vibrant red felt roses provides a sobering visual representation of the nearly 4,000 county residents who have lost their lives to COVID-19 and the countless individuals impacted by that loss. As of Tuesday, the county’s death toll stood at 3,952.
Partially handcrafted by community volunteers, many of whom wish to memorialize loved ones lost, the Orange County display is one of several cropping up in Southern California near the one-year anniversary of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States. ....

Santa Monica joins 100 cities in effort to establish national holiday honoring those lost to COVID-19


SANTA MONICA, Calif. (KABC) After a full year since the first known COVID-19 death in the United States, people all over America on Monday remembered the friends, neighbors and family members lost to the disease, in what s become a national day of mourning.
Santa Monica is joining more than 100 other cities to proclaim the first Monday of March as COVID Memorial Day in an effort to make it a national holiday.
Some took the time to remember those individuals lost at the city s Rose River Memorial, which features handmade felt roses from all over Southern California dedicated to those that have died from the virus. ....
