Women's Weekend Watch: NCAA First & Second Round Preview, Part I

We made it! After months of wondering whether the 2021 season would even happen, the powers that be figured it out. The student-athletes and coaches stayed as safe and healthy as possible under unprecedented circumstances (can we retire that phrase soon?). And now, we’ve arrived at May Madness.
Choosing the 29-team field involved some unprecedented (sorry) discussions. The Big Ten only played conference opponents. Some teams played 11 or 12 games while others got in 16 or more. And the bracket isn’t without controversy (Duke at No. 7? No Penn State?). But that’s all pundit-speak. Over the next three weekends, teams will settle scores between the lines. Here’s (half of) what to watch for this weekend. ....

Right now, North Carolina is simply untouchable.
The unquestioned No. 1 team in the nation reinforced its standing atop the Nike / US Lacrosse Magazine Division I Women’s Top 20, dismantling No. 2 Syracuse 17-6 at UNC’s Dorrance Field. The Tar Heels are now 11-0.
The first 10 minutes of play were hardly indicative of how the game would turn out. Syracuse (6-1, 4-1 ACC) were connecting from everywhere. After Meaghan Tyrrell and Scottie Rose Growney traded goals to begin the contest, Sam Swart, Megan Carney and Tyrrell each scored in a three-goal run that resulted in a 4-1 lead for the Orange. ....

There’s seemingly no stopping North Carolina.
Boston College learned that lesson Saturday, deploying a double shutoff on UNC’s star attackers Katie Hoeg and Jamie Ortega, only to watch the Tar Heels’ midfield take over in a 21-9 win in Chapel Hill, N.C.
No. 1 North Carolina (6-0, 2-0 ACC) scored seven unanswered goals to start the second half and pull away from No. 11 Boston College (2-1, 0-1). The Tar Heels have won 12 straight games dating back to last season and have outscored their six opponents this year 95-38. ....
